Indonesian Diplomat Killed in Armed Attack in Peru

An Indonesian diplomat at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Lima, Zetro Leonardo Purba (40), was fatally shot while cycling with his wife on Monday evening (September 1, 2025) in the Lince district. The attack was carried out by a group of armed assailants.

According to initial reports, the attackers intercepted the couple and opened fire without warning, striking Purba three times. He was rushed to Javier Prado Clinic, where medical staff confirmed that his injuries were fatal. His wife survived the attack and is currently receiving support due to severe trauma.

Zetro Leonardo Purba had been serving in Peru for only five months. Authorities confirmed that his wife, who was unharmed, is under protective custody.

The Peruvian National Police, alongside forensic teams, are investigating the incident to determine the motive. KBRI Lima and the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are coordinating closely to respond to this tragic event.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu RI) expressed its condolences in an official statement on Tuesday (September 2, 2025):
“Kemlu RI mourns the passing of Zetro Leonardo Purba (Junior Counselor at KBRI Lima, Peru). We pray that his deeds are accepted by God Almighty, and we wish strength and patience to his family.”

This incident has raised serious concern for the Indonesian government, highlighting ongoing risks to diplomats serving abroad.
