Indonesia Achieves Lowest US Import Tariff Rate in Asia: A Major Economic Breakthrough

Jakarta, tarnabakunews.com | July 16, 2025
Indonesia has secured a major breakthrough in its international trade relations, with US President Donald Trump approving a reduction in import tariffs on Indonesian products—from 32% down to 19%. This rate is currently the lowest among all Asian countries, even lower than Vietnam’s reduced rate of 20%.

The Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, emphasized that this development marks a significant milestone.

Our government has successfully reduced the tariff from 32% to 19%, the lowest among Asian countries,” Hasan stated on Wednesday (July 16, 2025).

This achievement is the result of extensive negotiations led by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, along with direct intervention by President Prabowo Subianto.

President Prabowo is scheduled to return to Indonesia later this afternoon and is expected to announce full details of the agreement in a formal statement.

As part of the deal, Indonesia has committed to:

Purchase USD 15 billion worth of energy products

Buy USD 4.5 billion in agricultural commodities

Acquire 50 units of the latest Boeing aircraft

Responding to the news, Gundy Cahyadi, Research Director at Prasasti Center for Policy Studies, advised the public to view the development within a broader context.

Trump-style tariffs are more about political theater than long-term policy,” Gundy remarked.
He added that global financial markets have grown accustomed to this style of diplomacy, where threats of tariffs are often followed by behind-the-scenes negotiations.
